The Elder Scrolls: Blades reveal at Bethesda’s E3 2018 conference

What is Blades?

The Elder Scrolls: Blades is the next instalment in the beloved role playing game series by Bethesda that includes Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. It has been especially designed for and but will also be released on home consoles, PC and VR platforms. During Bethesda’s 2018 E3 conference, Todd Howard the Director and Executive Producer of Bethesda Game Studios took the stage to reveal the game.

iPhone & Android controls

Blades has console quality graphics and you use touch controls to play. You can tap to move, use the on-screen dual sticks and combat uses your unique swipes to attack and block. There is also a portrait mode so the whole game can be played entirely one-handed.

Blades gameplay

As a member of the ancient order of the Blades you are one of the Empire’s top agents. Having been forced into exile you return to your hometown to discover it has been destroyed and you must rebuild it.

You create and customise your own unique character which you can level-up to improve and add abilities. You will engage in melee combat and you will be able to learn powerful spells.

There are indoor dungeons some of which are hand-crafted, some are procedurally generated. There are also beautiful outdoor landscapes.

The game has three modes of play, Town, Abyss and Arena.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades town acts as a hub for your quests

Town is the heart of your personal adventure which you use to access quests as well as the town-building game. As you gain tools and resources you will be able to rebuild, decorate and upgrade your town. This will unlock new NPCs and quests.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades Abyss — see how long you can survive in the dungeon

Abyss is an endless-dungeon where you can fight a series of evermore dangerous monsters.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades Arena — fight other players

Arena is where you can prove your combat prowess in a series of one-to-one battles against opponents.

Blades’ release platforms

The Elder Scrolls: Blades will be released on iPhone & iPad iOS and Android. It will be free-to-play although it’s likely there will be in-app transactions as with Bethesda’s other mobile game, Fallout Shelter.

On Blades being released on other formats Todd Howard said:

“WE ARE GOING TO BRING BLADES TO EVERY DEVICE AND EVERY SYSTEM WE CAN. PHONES, PC, CONSOLES. ALSO VIRTUAL REALITY ON MOBILE ALL THE WAY UP TO HIGH-END VR, ON PCS.”

So it’s not too hard to infer from platforms Bethesda has previously released games on that The Elder Scrolls: Blades will be to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PSVR, Oculus Rift and HTC VIVE. Mobile VR platforms may well include Samsung Gear VR as well as Oculus Go. It’s possible that Blades may not be free-to-play on other platforms.

Blades — cross-platform multiplayer

TES: Blades will have some multiplayer elements to it. In Arena mode you will be able to fight against other players additionally you will be able to visit the towns of your friends. These mechanics along with Fallout 76 suggest that Bethesda are experimenting with games that retain the single-player experience yet add interaction with other players.

What’s intriguing is Howard’s wish for cross-platform play. He said:

“WHAT’S REALLY COOL IS THAT ALL OF THOSE CONNECT TO EACH OTHER… AND SO WITH BLADES YOU CAN BE IN A MEETING PLAYING BLADES AGAINST SOMEONE AT HOME IN VR.”

The next mainline TES game The Elder Scrolls Game VI won’t likely be available until the next generation of consoles which may be 2021 or even later. So The Elder Scrolls: Blades could be a great way to quench that role-playing thirst.
