What is ? What you should focus on?

UX Design is all about studying people’s desires, goals and the feeling they get while working with your product, even if we speak about an online software, website or app. When you are using a platform and you feel that everything is in the right place, you are not spending a lot of time searching for information you are interested in and everything is clear and easy to understand, this means that under that beautiful look, there is a good UX designer that did a very good job.

What you should focus on as a UX Designer?

Focus on people.

The very first step is to find the type of customer that will use your product, and for that you need to do your research. Ask yourself the following questions: Why would people want to use this product? What are they looking for in a product? Who are we designing for? The answers of those questions will help you establish the main goals of your groups and creating a strategy that will fit your personas.

Personas will help you establish the functionality, develop design wireframes and focus on the realistic needs of the users. Design personas help you learn about user goals, their behavior and also the things you must avoid.

Now, that you did your research, it is time to apply the knowledge you gained in buiding a product or service that people understand and relate to. Don’t forget that personas are changing and you must revisit them from time to time to keep your product constantly up to date when speaking about user needs and requirements.

Focus on feelings.

Many people are still confused about what UX Design means, and they describe it frequently as how the product works or looks, when in fact that has nothing to do with this concept. Great design is never enough to achieve success in your business. A user can have a great or a bad one, depending on how much you are paying attention to his / her feelings and emotions while developing your product. Everything starts with the user needs and goals. The user is the one that controls the outcome of a design process, so the more understanding their behavior and desires, the better the product will be at the end.

The best user experience is reached when people feel comfortable working with your product. They find the path to their destination easily, their journey being an enjoyable one.

Focus on behaviour.

All of us, whatever our profession might be, have a very crowded schedule and we all need fast solutions to our needs and tasks. Because of that, we are constantly looking for efficient ways to finish our objectives as fast as possible. That is why UX Designers must anticipate the user’s behaviour when interacting with a product, and leverage those findings to create the perfect tool for users to achieve their goals.

Why would people stop from whatever they are doing for your product? It is worth it or it is a total waste of time? The secret of UX Design is to offer users an environment that they find useful and constructive, you need to give them purpose. Your product must add value. In order to do that, you must understand your users and be empathic to their problems, and then find a solution that fits their needs.

Ken Norton — Partner at Google Ventures, Ex-PM at Google said :

“Start with a problem we’d like to solve. UX design is focused on anything that affects the user’s journey to solve that problem, positive or negative, both on-screen and off.”

Even if you already found a solution for user’s problems, that doesn’t mean that your job is over. This is just a temporary solution because people’s needs are changing everyday, your product is evolving and your work as an user experience designer must be an ongoing process. From time to time, you need to improve your work by adding new features or small changes in the UI design, that will change how the product feels.

Conclusion

To conclude this article, I will quote the user experience architect Don Norman, that brought the term UX to wider knowledge:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BdtGjoIN4E

“The first requirement for an exemplary user experience is to meet the exact needs of the customer, without fuss or bother. Next comes simplicity and elegance that produce products that are a joy to own, a joy to use. True user experience goes far beyond giving customers what they say they want, or providing checklist features. In order to achieve high-quality user experience in a company’s offerings there must be a seamless merging of the services of multiple disciplines, including engineering, marketing, graphical and industrial design, and interface design.”
