Recently, I was faced with the question: “How do I approach design?” There are many different facets to Design and I approach them all in different ways. I thought the best way to represent my Journey was through gifs, pictures, and quotes.

The Path

“Design is everywhere. From the dress you’re wearing to the smartphone you’re holding, it’s design.”

— Samadara Ginige, Designer and Developer

There is design everywhere and every design experience is different. There are no rules to UX design. The way in which you approach UX Design will differ from project to project in reaction to the specific needs and problems of that project.

The Twists and Turns

“Accidents often produce the best solutions…Only you can recognize the difference between an accident and your original intent.”

— Jennifer Morla, Creative Director

There are going to be many curveballs thrown at you while working on a design. When things do not go to plan, you have to adapt and get back on track.

Oh, The People You’ll Meet

“People ignore design that ignores people.”

— Frank Chimero, Designer

Along your User Experience Journey, you will meet many different types of people. You will talk to many different people and gather information. And from this research, you will create different personas that target the users of your product. You need to keep the user in mind during the entire design process.

Blend into the Everyday

“The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it.” –Mark Weiser

Ana Rosario, User Experience Researcher

As a UX designer, I am solving real world problems. I want to make the experience of using the product seamless and ideally I would like the product to flow into users’ everyday life and become part of their daily routine.

We’re All in This Together

“The power of one, if fearless and focused, is formidable, but the power of many working together is better.”

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Professor and Politician

As part of a UX Design team, we are there to support each other. We are there to bounce ideas off of each other and come up with the best solutions to a problem. With more minds put together, the opportunity for a truly remarkable solution becomes greater.

Keeping that Growth in Mind

“An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”

Benjamin Franklin, Politician, Inventor, Polymath

It is so important to always realize the room to grow and to learn. There is always something to gain through learning from your failures. It’s always great to learn from others who have been in the business longer and those who have different skillsets. In addition, it is always good to adapt to new trends.

Conclusion

Every time I approach a new project, the experience will be different. Different problems require different solutions and different products require different approaches. With every experience, there will be different obstacles that emerge and different circumstances that require me to adapt and keep moving forward, even if that involves taking a turn to the right or left. In addition, I hope to have the support of my team or other people in the business when obstacles come about. I want to collaborate with other designers and people with different backgrounds to come up with the best solutions. I want the products I work on to be memorable, but essential and mold into the everyday experience. My products should feel second nature to people. I hope to accomplish this goal through always keeping who I am designing for, the personas, in mind and cater to their specific needs.

The path to a good UX design will be winding and taking different turns. Each product will go into new and different territory. However, it will always move forward towards making delightful solutions.
