People believe in God to help them through difficult situations. How can we design products (or brands/experiences/services) that can create a similar sense of belief in our users?
Alright, I know this might probably be the weirdest headline you’ll come across Medium today. However, sometimes the weirdest things can help us think critically and that’s what this thought did to me.
While I am writing this, billions of people across the world are celebrating the Hindu festival of Diwali. Diwali is primarily known as a celebration of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana, signifying victory of good over evil. Just like Diwali, I also celebrate other festivals like Eid and Christmas, which have their own significance. However, across all these festivals, one common thread rings true –
I believe in deity or some kind of superpower.
Growing up, most of us learn about God from our family. Even my parents, though they never forced me, always taught me to worship and believe in the power of God. We are made to believe that if we can’t figure out things, it’s good to close our eyes, pray, and things will get better. I have done that numerous times before, I still do it, and will continue doing it for the remainder of my life because I think it works for me.
As I have been designing products for my users recently, I realize it’s very similar to the scenario between us and our parents. Just like our parents teach us to believe in God,
I want to teach my users to believe in my product because I feel it has the ability to solve their problems.
This brings us to the most important question – “How can Product Designers make users strongly believe in their product?”
I thought about a few ways our parents instill their values and beliefs in us and it’s very realistic for a Designer to do the same with their users.
